Danielle Ramsay of Saskatoon had a personal-best singles performance at the Pan American Championships that was held in Guatemala City from March 22 to 30.
Ramsay, who has competed at 5 other international tournaments as a member of Team Canada played women’s singles and was also a member of the team that played in the Women’s Team Competition.
Ramsay’s success started in the initial round, which was pool play for seeding. Ramsay who was seeded fourth in her pool of four athletes, upset the top two seeds to advance in second place coming out of her pool.
In the medal round, Ramsay faced the Natalia Mendez of Argentina in the quarterfinal. Ramsay won the first to games before Mendez game back and forced a tie-breaker in the best of 5 match. Ramsay was up in the final game, but ended up losing the match narrowly with scores of 11-4, 12-10, 4-11, 3-11, 8-11.
In the Women’s Team Competition, Ramsay faced a very experienced player in Michelle Key of USA in the quartefinals. Ramsay rose to the occasion and was once again very close to causing another upset. She again won the first two games and went to a tie-breaker, eventually losing the match with scores of 11-8, 11-9, 9-11, 5-11, 10-12. Th
Ramsay also played women’s doubles with Marjolaine Parent of Saint-Jacques, QC. The team lost out in their quarterfinal match to USA.
