Iwaasa & Murray Advance to Final at Pan Am Championships

Coby Iwaasa of Lethbridge and Samuel Murray of Baie-Comeau have advanced to the Men’s Open Doubles semifinal at the Pan Am Championships being held in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia.

Iwaasa and Murray had a decisive win today over Jake Bredenbeck and Sam Bredenbeck of the USA in today’s semi-final, winning in three straight games with scores of 15-13, 15-13, 15-12. The Canadian team was seeded 4th in the tournament and USA was the top seed.

The first game of the match was extremely close from the onset, with the two teams tied at several points before the Canadians finished it off. In games two and three, Team Canada went up early and although Team USA fought back, they weren’t ever able to catch up.

The Canadians will be up against Juan Francisco Cueva and Jose Daniel Ugalde of Ecuador in Thursday’s final.

Iwaasa and Murray won silver together at the 2019 Pan Am Championships in men’s doubles. The duo also advanced to the quarterfinals at the 2021 World Championships held last December.

Michèle Morissette of Baie-Comeau and Juliette Parent of Saint-Jacques will face each other in the Women’s Open consolation final on Thursday.

The Team Event will also begin on Thursday once singles and doubles finals are over.
